In Memory Of Thomas J. Quinlan

Tom Quinlan was a beloved teacher who devoted his life to studying, sharing and loving poetry. His thousands of students over eight decades were treated to the deep knowledge of a scholar coupled with the vocal skills and passion of an actor.

With his passing, Tom's personal legacy and widespread reputation called for one last master class.

Take a seat...and enjoy!

"Poetry, I'm not the first to say, teaches us how it should be read. But it also teaches us how to think about being alive. The gratitude of students changed by a poem is a measure that we have passed on something valuable and durable.

Tom Quinlan has been a teacher of poetry for sixty-three years. He has carried poems to many, many seekers, knowing and unknowing, and he has worn the rhythms of poems into the fabric of his being."

Kind words from Tom’s previous students

- “His kindness to us, his students and drama club members, is what made him stand out as one of our most beloved teachers.”

- “TQ taught me the greatest lesson of all in that little mini auditorium in the 140 hallway. Never take life too seriously, there is funny in everything!”

- “Mr Quinlan was such a lovely man, a soul bigger than life and he always made time for his students, of which I was one of the multitude (but never made to feel that way).”

- “I hear his booming voice reading poetry to the angels! A wonderful teacher and a wonderful man. I always sat in the front of his class so I didn't miss a thing.”

- “He was my favorite teacher, mentor and advocate. I think of him every time I read a poem. Rest in peace, good sir and thank you for believing in me when I couldn’t.
